About the Developmental Services Worker (DSW) program

The Developmental Services Worker (DSW) program is a one-year, full-time diploma program designed to equip students with the knowledge, skills, and practical experience required to support individuals with developmental disabilities.

What You Will Learn:

By enrolling in this program, students will:

  • Understand the different stages of human development and how developmental disabilities impact individuals and families.
  • Gain knowledge of available community, social, and economic support services for people with disabilities.
  • Learn and apply behavioural intervention strategies to effectively assist clients with special needs.
  • Differentiate between normal and abnormal psychology and recognize various behavioural patterns.
  • Develop strong communication skills and learn techniques for effective interpersonal relationships.
  • Participate in counseling labs to practice real-world client interactions and support techniques.
  • Acquire hands-on experience through field placements, where they will learn to assist and manage individuals with unique needs.

Developmental Services Worker Program

The 1,345 Developmental Services Worker Program is structured as follows:

825 hours of theoretical discussion (Online Learning)

  • Delivered through a combination of live online classes and independent study, students will engage in in-depth learning about human development, developmental disabilities, behavioural intervention strategies, and social support services.
  • Live online classes are held every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday from 10am to 2pm, allowing students to actively participate in discussions and interactive sessions with instructors.

175 hours of school lab training (Hybrid/Virtual & Hands-On Practice)

  • Students will develop practical skills through counseling labs, role-playing exercise, and case studies, focusing on interpersonal relationships, effective communication, and behavior management techniques.

345 hours of Field Practicum (On-the-Job Training in Community Settings)

  • Students will gain hands-on experience in community care agencies, behavioral clinics, and group homes, where they will work directly with individuals who have developmental, behavioral, physical, and cognitive disabilities.
  • This placement provides an opportunity to apply learned theories in real-world care settings, under the guidance of experienced professionals.
